OnlyFans, the platform widely known as one of the only acceptable and safe spots for sex workers has announced that it will start blocking pornography on its site. This is according to multiple reports — all of which indicate that this sudden change of heart is motivated by multiple factors.
Surprisingly, the platform is ditching the very content and creators that helped it gain fame across the world. The Britain-based company has made heaps of money from independent creators in the explicit content category and has in recent months started to shift focus away from that part of the platform. Now we know why.
OnlyFans now, OnlyHaters tomorrow
Speaking to Bloomberg, OnlyFans confirmed that, starting in October, its terms of service will change. Users will “still be allowed to put up nude photos and videos, provided they’re consistent with OnlyFans’ policy.”
The company cites compliance with the legal expectations of banking partners and payment providers like Mastercard and Visa. But that’s seemingly not the only reason. While the company is currently lobbying for investors and want to look its best doing it, a new investigative report by the BBC reveals some unscrupulous moderation practices — something that could also affect its recent decision.
“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” OnlyFans said, according to Bloomberg.
OnlyFans is currently caught in an investigation that details how its moderation practices have let illegal sex content and profiles live on the platform without harsh Detailed penalties. This includes instances of child pornography, escort services and some worse stuff we don’t want to mention here. Go ahead and read the full BBC report for that stuff.
Of course, OnlyFans denied all these claims, and considering its recent push for only safe-for-work content on its apps, we’re sure the reasoning is a combination of the above reports.
