There have been whisperings and murmurings about a fabled folding Google Pixel device for years. Hints at the device were first seen in 2019 after the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Huawei’s Mate X. Now, new information has come to light that suggests we could see a foldable from the search engine giant before the end of the year.
A developer that goes by cstark27 spotted the folding Pixel’s codename, ‘Passport’, within the code of the Android 12 beta. This suggests that the foldable will be powered by the newly announced Google Tensor chips, like the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

There have also been suggestions that Passport will use the same 7.6in 120Hz folding screen that Samsung showed off last week in its Galaxy Z Fold 3, which would make sense. Google and Samsung have been making eyes at each other for a while and recently collaborated on Wear OS for Samsung’s Watch 4 series. Samsung is also the current king of folding screen tech so it’s a smart move from Google.
Come to the foldable party, Google
We would welcome a folding Pixel for many reasons. For one, it would mean the owners of Android would need to work on interface support for folding devices. Not that it’s particularly bad right now, but you know, it could always be better.
One wonders then why the folding Pixel wasn’t announced alongside the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro earlier this month. Do we still have some time to wait or is it saving that reveal for another event later in the year? Maybe the leaks are just wrong, who knows. Well, Google knows obviously.
