Hot on the heels of the Pixel 6 announcement, the rumour mill has ground out some interesting reports about the supposedly upcoming Pixel 5a. When we saw the Pixel 6 announcement, we thought Google would be skipping the 5a, seeing as the Pixel 5 didn’t quite live up to the hype it garnered. Google, however, has other plans.

Google says Let them eat(have) cake(the Pixel 5a)

A new rumour has suggested the Pixel 5a will be launching on 26 August, but only to the USA and Japanese markets, for around $450 or just over R6,500 at current exchange rates.

Its fairly reasonable tech specs include the same chipset as the Pixel 4a 5G because the 5a will be 5G capable as well (duh). You can expect a 6.4in screen that can be forced to provide a 90Hz refresh rate, not confirmed to be the same OLED tech on the Pixel 5 but that would be our guess.

The 5a will also get a significant battery upgrade over the 4a and even sneaks past the Pixel 5, with a 4,650mAh cell. Unlike the whole two choices with the Pixel 5, you’ll only have the choice of one colour for the 5a, ‘mostly black’.

The 5a will share the 5’s camera setup and will even feature a headphone jack, but will step it down a notch for the IP rating to IP67.

If you are interested in the Pixel 5a then you’ll need to look for somewhere that imports them because last time we checked, this isn’t the USA or Japan. Or maybe wait for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, although those will probably cost quite a bit more.
