Showmax is, like many streaming services around the world, focusing time, money and effort on its own original programming. Skemerdans is one of those. This tale revolving around the Oasis jazz club in the Cape Flats has the distinction of being the service’s first Afrikaans-language Showmax Original.
And, as luck would have it, there’s a new trailer for the show out and about. The last time we checked in on it, there was precious little content to see because… well, it hadn’t actually been filmed yet. That took place in October last year, at Cape Town’s Club Galaxy.
Sussing out Skemerdans
The storyline follows the fortunes of the Fortune family, headed up by Oasis club own Glenn Fortune. When he’s murdered, the fate of the club — and the family — rests on the outcome of a struggle between Fortune’s sons, his widow, and a crime syndicate. The series is described as a neo-noir murder mystery, and the trailer for the show seems to bear that out.
Making up part of the cast are: SAFTA winners Kevin Smith (Isidingo, Arendsvlei), Ilse Klink (Stroomop, Isidingo), Brendon Daniels (Four Corners, Sara se Geheim, Arendsvlei); SAFTA nominee Vinette Ebrahim (7de Laan, Binnelanders); Carmen Maarman (Arendsvlei, Lui Maar Op, Belinda); Trudy van Rooy (Die Byl, Sara Se Geheim); and the late Ceagan Arendse (Suidooster, Arendsvlei).
Keen? You can catch the series on Showmax from 28 April this year.
