What’re your weekend plans? We’re going alpha with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

We are nearing the official release of the latest Call of Duty, named after the much-loved Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare first released in 2007. Just this time, the tech and gameplay are slightly more… modern. And the open alpha on PlayStation 4 for the 2v2 Gunfight mode starts today.

This weekend we’ll get a first taste of our favourite shooter-series, with an exclusive open alpha becoming available on PlayStation 4. You can go and preload it right now because the download files are already available. The servers, on the other hand, will only go live at 19:00 this afternoon (Friday, 23 August).

Ready up, soldier

According to the PlayStation Store, the download file is a mere 22GB — so if you’re still on a copper line, you better get that download going. Activision is feeling generous, and anyone with a PS4 and an internet connection can participate in this weekend’s test — players don’t even need an active PS Plus subscription to play.

Players will have access to five maps, and only one mode: 2v2 Gunfight. The available maps will be Speedball, King, Pine, Docks, and Stack. Also seeing as this is an alpha test, Activision will change up the mechanics throughout the weekend — we don’t know exactly which spanner will be thrown in the works but it does make for some excitement.

PlayStation has published a bunch of nifty tips and tricks for getting to grips with the Modern Warfare alpha once it launches. Oh, you’re on Xbox or PC, are you? Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the weekend of 21 to 23 September to access the open beta.
