If you’re a fan of zombie games, now might be a time to rejoice. Unless you’re also aware of what games based on films (specifically those timed to the film’s launch) are usually like. Cult zombie flick Zombieland‘s sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, is getting its own video game adaptation. Called Zombieland: Double Tap – Road Trip, players will get to experience it on 15 October on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Switch. And, honestly, it’s the launch date that worries us.
And that’s because there hasn’t been a single game-to-movie tie-in title that hasn’t sucked horribly. We’re not talking a game that was based on a movie that released in its own time, either. Ghostbusters, for example, was simply delightful. Specifically, we’re talking about games that are timed to the film’s release date. Not one of those titles managed to rise above the licensed title curse.
Of course, this top-down, twin-stick multiplayer shooter could be an exception.Players will get to team up as the film’s main quartet (Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock) and roam the game world putting zombies in their place. Weapon options seem varied and there are some types of special infected to encounter. Still, we’re not sold on the game. At this point because all we’ve seen are stills but they don’t bode especially well. The impression we get is of Left 4 Dead seen from another point of view, but the simplistic UI and overemphasis on character likenesses make us nervous.
Hit-and-miss
The zombie shooter is being developed by High Voltage, a studio with a chequered history of releases. Sure, they did the updated-for-current-consoles Saints Row IV but they’re also responsible for more than a little shovelware and a whole lot of right-to-the-bargain-bin releases. Zombieland: Double Tap – Road Trip doesn’t strike us as being far outside what the studio has done in the past… and that’s not a great thing.
Of course, if you’re really keen on some twin-stick zombie slayage, you don’t have to wait for this uncertain quantity to drop. You can always hit up existing twin-stick Dead Nation if you’re that committed to shooting the walking dead in the face. You’re gonna need a PlayStation 3, 4 or Vita, though.
