The platform everyone heads to when Facebook or Instagram is down was down on Thursday night. Twitter went down around 21:00 on Thursday evening across parts of the world including South Africa, the US and the UK. Users reported being unable to access the platform on web and mobile devices.
Twitter users trying to access the platform started reporting issues on DownDetector, a site that monitors website outages. Apparently, users couldn’t access the platform on Android, iOS or through a variety of web browsers.
Don’t panic
Last week the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms were down for an extended amount of time (think: hours) and users flooded to Twitter to discuss their social media woes. This time around, the tides were turned and Twitter users were forced to dust off ye olde Facebook profile.
Twitter acknowledged the platform was experiencing issues on its status page shortly after the first outages were reported online. It said: “We are currently investigating issues people are having accessing Twitter. We will keep you updated on what’s happening.”
The site said the outage was caused by “an internal configuration change, which we’re now fixing.” Luckily, the platform was up and running by 22:00 on Thursday night, so it was just one agonising hour in Twitter Limbo.
