The new instalment from mobile developer Niantic, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is finally available in South Africa. So without further ado: You’re a wizard, esteemed Stuff reader. No, really. We’re not merely pulling your strangely long legs (you should really let Madam Pomfrey take a look at those).
Grab your wand, slip into something a bit more… magical, and head to the nearest portkey, because the wizarding world is in grave danger, and this time it’ll take more than Harry Potter and his band of incredibly capable high schoolers to save it.
Get on with it…
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game that allows you to explore the actual world around you in search of magical creatures and artefacts that have been displaced from the wizarding world.
An event called the ‘Calamity’ has scattered those ‘Foundables’ throughout our muggle world, and now it’s your responsibility to return them to their rightful spots. This is mainly done by casting spells, using potions and generally living out your wildest Harry Potter fantasies.
The game features iconic HP locations that are brought to life with he AR portkeys. Players can create a unique Ministry of Magic ID detailing their wand type, chosen profession, and Hogwarts house. Aside from those Potter-specific touches, the overall gameplay experience feels very similar to Pokémon Go.
So, long story short, then — if you enjoyed Pokémon Go and also happen to adore Harry Potter, you’ll feel right at home in the world of Wizards Unite. The game is available for free on both iOS and Google Play. Beware of the sneaky microtransactions though. And have a wonderfully wizarding time.
