It’s no secret we love Lego here at Stuff so,whether it’s the opening of a new store, a dig at folding phones, or the launch of a replica Ford Mustang, if it’s got Lego in the headline we’ll jump at it. Which is why we’re excited to see there’s a new, nifty Lego set in town… and it has the unique honour of being the Danish company’s first black-and-white offering. It’s the ‘Steamboat Willie’ set and you can get it right now from the Great Yellow Brick Company for R1,400.
The set commemorates the 90th anniversary of Mickey (and Minnie) Mouse, who made their first appearances in a monochrome animated short called — you guessed it — ‘Steamboat Willie’, way back in 1928.
Push the good ship S.S. Willie along a flat surface and its steam pipes bob up and down while the paddle wheels on the side rotate. In addition to the new minifigs of Mickey and Mini, the set includes a working crane, a bell, Minnie’s guitar and sheet music, and — our favourite — Mickey’s parrot.
The steamboat measures 15cm x 26cm x 14cm and along with the requisite building instructions there’s a booklet with all the details of the Disney short that inspired it.
If you can’t make it to the Sandton City store you can always order online, and as you’ll be spending more than R500 delivery will be free. We’d move fast, though, as we’d be surprised if this one’s still in stock come lunchtime.
