Electronic Arts’ story-based Star Wars game has been canned – report

Ever since Electronic Arts acquired the rights to make games based on the Star Wars universe back in 2013 we’ve been hoping for a proper story-based game (like the sadly-cancelled 1313). There was supposed to be a game like that in the works, being developed by now-shuttered studio Visceral. When Visceral closed up shop in 2017 EA’s unnamed story-heavy Star Wars title (code-named Ragtag when Visceral was working on it) was sent over to Electronic Arts Vancouver (who named their new project Orca). But now it has been canned, according to a report from Kotaku.

Which is a pity because information, also via Kotaku, explains the premise of the cancelled Star Wars title rather nicely. Players would have taken on the role of a scoundrel (we’re thinking a Han Solo type) or a bounty hunter (Boba Fett, is that you?) and wandered around a collection of open-world planets doing jobs and missions for various factions. It sounds a little like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in space, which would have been a fantastic thing.

But it’s sadly not to be. Not that we actually know what we’re missing, because nothing was ever publicly shown concerning the game. But to lose another entry in the Star Wars story is going to be a wrench for some fans, especially after two loot box-heavy multiplayer games were already released (even if the second one did manage to kill off loot boxes for everyone).

For serious fans, there are still Star Wars games on the way. Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall) are due to launch Jedi: Fallen Order before the end of this year and there’s another, less ambitious Star Wars project reportedly in the works. Little is known about it but it supposedly has a tentative 2020 release date.
