You'll often catch me dreaming of a Wind Waker remaster. Or sleeping. One of the two.

Apple’s Far Out event kicked off with the announcement of the new Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Ultra. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, describes the latest lineup as “the best Apple Watch lineup yet.” Well, you would say that, wouldn’t you, Tim? We’ll be the judges of that. Last year saw an update to Google Maps that added an eco-friendly navigator, which chooses a different route if it can save fuel (or electricity). The update was first released in the U.S and Canada, with Google officially announcing the feature is coming to “nearly” 40 European countries in a few weeks. Hitting the European market isn’t the only change. Google is adding an option to tell Maps what sort of car you’re in, whether it’s petrol, diesel, hybrid, or fully electric. You’ll see why in a second. OK Google, bring the update to South Africa Regardless of the type…

It feels as if every business in South Africa is jumping on the WhatsApp Business train. And why not? It’s a simple method of getting in touch with a business while avoiding any social anxieties you may have. It’s almost as easy as making your mother book your doctor appointments for you (not that we would do that). With the rise of business accounts across the platform, business operators are examining ways to separate their work and personal lives. That’s what WhatsApp is providing with its latest update. The pending update lets users assign chats to specific devices. LinkedUp As…

Maybe humanity is a little too hung up on AI taking over the world. Yes, it’s an issue – but one for the future. Humanity needs to survive the uprising of cyber cockroaches and no, we didn’t make that term up. We did make up the part about them taking over the world though. We can’t say for sure that they won’t, but we can make a pretty good guess. Scientists have too far this time around, creating cyborg cockroaches that are powered by the sun. Why? Science hopes to use its newfound army for search and rescue missions and…

WhatsApp group admins felt a sudden surge of power on 1 September when an update gave them the ability to delete messages for everyone in a group. The idea was for admins to keep the peace in group chats – mainly ones that are open to the public. Emma Sadleir Berkowitz, a South African social media law expert, is warning South African WhatsApp admins about a potential legal concern involving the update. Watch your back According to Berkowitz, the update is far more important than initially believed. For years, debates have argued whether a group admin should be held responsible…

AI has long been better than humans at our own games. Chess (Damn you, Nelson!) and more recently DeepMind’s ‘Go’ AI, which comfortably took down a professional player. AI will only improve as time goes on, moving onto different projects and perfecting them one by one. And then there’s DeepMind’s latest venture; teaching an AI how to play the beautiful game. Which shouldn’t be harder than teaching it chess, right? Yesterday, DeepMind – which is Google-owned – published a paper showing off its new neural probabilistic motor primitives (NPMP). The point? Teaching AI how to use physical bodies, well enough…

An overhaul to South Africa’s current driver’s licence system is coming, as Cabinet confirms the launch of newer, more secure licence cards. The current system is 24 years old and is in desperate need of a change. It’s become too expensive to keep alive, forcing the government’s hand. News of an updated driver’s licence first came from Fikile Mbalula earlier this year, with an expected release of October 2023. At the time, he said he was still awaiting Cabinet approval. This has since been given. This means the October 2023 release date is likely still on track (if everything goes…

If you’ve ever seen someone walking around with a cane and a seeing-eye dog and thought “I want to look like that”, now you can. Lenovo has announced the Lenovo Glasses T1, a pair of consumer smart glasses. A set of Micro OLED displays sit behind the glass which pairs up to either Windows, macOS, Android or iOS. They look interesting but feel too niche to really make a dent within the industry. Maybe we’ll be proved wrong – especially if a wireless, less on-your-face model arrives in the future. Better than Matt Murdock’s  The announcement came during Lenovo’s virtual…
