If you didn’t see this one coming, you’re probably not very familiar with the handheld gaming landscape. Announcing an OLED-ified follow-up to your gaming device is almost a rite of passage. Nintendo did it; Valve did it, and now it looks like PlayStation is doing it. It’s nowhere near as cool, though, seeing as it’s for the PS Portal.
The cake is a lie?
Sony Interactive Entertainment registers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105 certificates on Wi-Fi Alliance on September 21, 2026.
This could be PlayStation Portal OLED Model! https://t.co/fBfyebQPzD

You know, that glorified excuse for a gaming console that required owners to already have a PS5 to use it at launch? Sony has at least done away with that onerous condition since, but it doesn’t automatically negate the fact that the Portal isn’t a proper console; it’s a streaming handheld. And an OLED model won’t change that.
It will make whichever game you’re streaming look that much better, however. Adding an OLED display is an easy way to upgrade the underlying hardware without raising costs much. Earlier this year, leaker Kepler_L2 hinted that a OLED refresh was in the works. Now, new filings at the Wi-Fi Alliance all but confirm it.

It was @Zuby_Tech on X who reported that the model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105 had appeared on the organisation’s website. These are different from the current designations for the handheld, and tell us that something is definitely happening behind the scenes. Trouble is, it could just be a rudimentary refresh to comply with the EU’s new consumer regulations, which force devices and their batteries to be easily replaceable.
Those filings unfortunately don’t indicate that the LCD is being replaced. We’re going off the industry’s past trends and Kepler_L2’s rumours from January (which were reiterated in June) that a Portal OLED refresh would land sometime in 2026. The Portal, it seems, garnered strong enough sales to warrant the supposed refresh.
