The second Comic Con Africa for 2025 has come and gone, but this year, beyond the fond memories, photos, and purchases (whether planned or otherwise), there’s something else that’s been left behind.
Acer Africa took the opportunity over the weekend to launch a new product in South Africa before anywhere else in the world. That’s not something that happens often.
Acer’s AiTV box, or ‘Acer 4K UHD Google TV Box’, although technically launched, isn’t yet readily available. While eager buyers can sign up for pre-orders exclusively from Incredible Connection for the “exclusive launch price” of R1,500, its local availability follows at some point in October. The exact date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Streaming and gaming with Acer AiTV
Most South Africans (especially Stuff readers) will be familiar with the concept of using a set-top box like this as an upgrade for their ageing TV. This particular model is built around an Amlogic S905X5M Quad-Core CPU, 2GB of DDR4 RAM, and 32GB of storage.
This chip also supposedly features AI smarts (hence the AiTV name), like AI Super Resolution, an enhanced user interface, and voice control. Other similar products have included those feats without the explicit use of AI, so we’re keen to see how Acer’s device stacks up.
As for connectivity, you’re looking at a fairly comprehensive array, including an HDMI port, two USB-C ports (one can be used for power), a USB-A port, optical audio via S/PDIF, a 1Gb/s RJ45 Ethernet connection, and a MicroSD card slot. Wi-Fi 6 is available for wireless connections, and you’ll get a remote for when you can’t shout at it to change to a different app.
“The Acer AiTV’s integrated AI and robust hardware redefine home entertainment, delivering sharper streaming and smarter features that seamlessly blend with a connected lifestyle. Gaming isn’t just a solo mission—it’s a family event, and we have just made it easier and more affordable,” says Glenn du Toit, Country Manager of Acer Africa.
