After FNB ditched Shoprite earlier this year to pursue a deal to flaunt its customers’ eBucks at Pick n Pay instead, Shoprite has been on a partner spree, first adding Standard Bank to its ranks and now, Absa. Starting 16 August 2025, “eligible” Absa cardholders shopping at Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, or LiquorShop (or via Sixty60) can earn up to 60% cash back through Absa Rewards.
It’s like a reward
Don’t get too excited just yet. That 60% cash-back deal is simply a part of a two-month promotion to get customers invested in the Absa Rewards programme and Shoprite’s new partnership. Beyond the first two months, customers will only be able to earn up to 30% cash back.
“Following an initial two-month launch promotion, reward amounts will revert to 30%, in-store and online, depending on a customer’s rewards tier. There are no vouchers or points: customers receive real cash back paid monthly into their Absa Rewards wallet to spend or save,” the group said in a statement.

The Shoprite Group noted that spend data from Absa confirmed that Checkers “represent the highest category of retail spend among its customers.” It also mentioned that the Sixty60 delivery service is popular amongst Absa customers. In other news, water is wet.
It’s not exactly clear which Absa cards and customers are “eligible” to earn cash back through the Rewards ecosystem, nor how these customers can earn the full 60% cash back when shopping at Shoprite/Checkers. Fingers crossed things become clearer after 16 August, when the partnership officially launches.
