Toyota SA’s gaming platform The Toyota Gaming Engine (TTGE) is launching another gaming tournament in the country, this time bringing driving gamers together in a chaotic test of who is the fastest and most unshakeable. Backseat Drivin’ GT Challenge will gather gamers on a virtual platform to race while staving off relentless banter and chirping.

Toyota’s Backseat Drivin’ GT Challenge will be played on Gran Tourismo. The 14 to 30 January event consists of six races across six unique tracks. The top twelve racers will clash on 11 February and the resulting six finalists will throw down on 13 Feb. First place gets R15,000 cash, second place gets R7,500, and third scores R2,500.
The competition is not just a contest of racing ability but also of who can keep their cool as they are bombarded by comedic commentary from three backseat drivers. Online personalities Annoyin’ Troy Shepherds, Traffic Jam-Jam, and Yellin’ Yerik Jomei will be chirping and roasting racers in a special segment. The racer with the most flawless lap wins a R1,000 Takealot voucher.
Users at home can also try their hand at being a fourth backseat driver. People can tag their own or others’ best jokes and comments on Instagram, Facebook, or X. The funniest or most disruptive comment wins a PlayStation 5. Users can watch a preview of the Backseat Drivin’ GT Challenge on Instagram, showing the three backseat drivers trying to knock pro-racing legend Michael van Rooyen off his square as he tries to finish his fastest lap in a high-performance Toyota GR Corolla.
