WhatsApp is rolling out another Android feature for beta testers, select users can now directly Google search images straight from the app. With this update, users can verify the authenticity of images received in chats by searching them directly on the web.
The feature, which is gradually being made available to beta testers, looks to help users identify manipulated or misleading images, providing another tool to combat AI-generated misinformation.
WhatsApp web search
Users can access the feature by opening a picture and finding the “Search on web” option under the overflow (three-dot) menu. This initiates a reverse image search through Google, making it easy for users to find additional information about an image without having to save and upload it manually. This convenience enhances security and transparency, allowing users to quickly confirm if an image is altered or taken out of context.
The search feature offers WhatsApp users more control over the content they encounter online. In a time when manipulated images and misinformation are more widespread, this feature helps provide users with valuable insights and context. Being directly accessible within the app also makes it easier for users to proactively pursue transparency. Importantly, the feature is optional, allowing users to choose whether to use it.
While the image is shared with Google for the search, WhatsApp does not process or store it. This ensures the feature is privacy-conscious, giving users peace of mind while exploring image authenticity. This feature is currently available to some testers on the Google Play Beta Program with the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android and will be rolling out to more users in the coming weeks.
