Leave it to Google to kick-off the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games in one of the most creative ways we’ve ever seen, with an ambitious new Doodle.

The doodle Champion Island Games, which is pretty much a full-blown JRPG, launched today ahead of the opening ceremony of this year’s unconventional Olympic Games. You play as (c)athlete Lucky — get it? Because it’s a cat that’s an athlete. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help Lucky defeat the island’s Champions and obtain seven sacred scrolls. To do this you’ll need to compete in seven different sporting events; Archery, Table Tennis, Skateboarding, marathon running, synchronised swimming, mountain climbing and rugby.
If you’re the competitive type, there’s even a global leader board for the four different teams, colour-coded and led by four unique mascots. At the time of writing the red team had quite the lead over the others but we suspect that’s because it was the closest at hand when presented with the choice.
If all that wasn’t enticing enough there are even side-quests and a few secrets strewn around the island for you and Lucky to help out with.
Take a peek behind the doodle
The doodle was created in collaboration with Japanese animation studio Studio4℃ who played a large role in the design and bringing the doodle to life. If you’re interested to learn more about its creation and some of the folklore behind the choices the studio made, there’s even a short behind-the-scenes video explaining just that.
The opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 (yes we know it’s a little confusing) Olympic Games should kick off at around 12:50 pm Central African Time on 24th July. You can catch it on SuperSport Grandstand or stream it live with Showmax Pro.
