Further fuelling the rumours that Sony is secretly working on a handheld gaming console to rival the Nintendo Switch 2 comes the news that Sony reportedly got Gran Turismo 7 running on Nintendo’s latest console. That’s not because it’s hoping to port the game — at least, that’s now how insider and journalist Jeff Grub put it.
We got GT7 on the Switch 2 before GTA VI
Instead, he makes it sound like Sony was feeling purely experimental and having a laugh here. That’s to say, don’t get your hopes up to see GT7 on the Switch 2 anytime soon. But it does beg an interesting question: what exactly was Sony doing, then? Testing out the capabilities of such a handheld console is our guess.
GT7 is still very much chained up to the PlayStation ecosystem, though rumours suggest a PC port is on the way. Grub even makes the point that Sony should prioritise the port, especially if it’s messing around with other consoles with no real intent of treating its fans to the game. Grub didn’t mention how well GT7 got on with the Switch 2’s inferior hardware, nor what it might mean for the company’s future in the handheld space.
Grub’s comments come only a few days after rumours about a possible PlayStation TV revival emerged. Whether it’ll be a proper product meant to combine with a proper PS6 handheld or is simply the branding for a docked console is still unclear. Either way, with the news of PlayStation’s next-gen console suffering due to the ongoing memory shortage, it’s unlikely we’ll see any of PlayStation’s plans come to fruition this year.
