The folks over at Xiaomi France accidentally leaked (and then deleted) the page for the Chinese company’s upcoming Xiaomi Tag. If the name and the available images aren’t enough of a clue, the teeny little gadget will be an answer to Apple’s AirTag.
They’re technically cheap and easy to make, so it’s surprising that there aren’t more of these from official brands. Xiaomi’s effort will function on both Apple’s FindMy network and Google’s Find Hub. Bluetooth and NFC are the connection options.
Tag. You’re it
Even the pricing for the device, whether it’s bought as a single unit or in a pack of four, was outed. A single Tag will set buyers back about R340 (€18), while a quartet costs about R1,150 (€60). The little white oval is said to measure 7.2mm thick. It’s powered by a CR2032 battery — the larger coin battery you’ll find in most stores — which is supposed to last a year at a time.

The little tracker uses Bluetooth 5.4 and NFC for its tracking. A version using UWB (ultra-wide band) is supposedly launching at a later date.
Speaking of a launch, there’s no sign when these will appear. It’s speculated that the Xiaomi Tag will join the company’s other announcements at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) early in March. Xiaomi will apparently have at least two smartphones and two tablets to show off. Adding these to the ‘accessories’ category of reveals makes sense. It also explains why Xiaomi France rectified its error as quickly as it did.
