Casio has been playing hard in the special edition space with its wristwatches, but we weren’t expecting the company’s calculators to get similar treatment. There are two new versions of the Japanese company’s JF-M200-TJ on the way, with a home country release initially, and a global launch planned after.
Casio’s wave function
And you’ll want one, even if it just does… whatever it is that an advanced calculator does (hint: They teach you how to Sin, of Cos). That’s because of their visual designs, both courtesy of Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. Even if you’ve never heard of the man, you’ve probably seen The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Perhaps even in a recent issue of Stuff.
Casio’s JF-M200-TJ-KHK features visuals taken from Hokusai’s Great Wave, while the company’s JF-M200-TJ-KHG model uses Fine Wind, Clear Morning as its visual inspiration. The casing and keys for both calculators have been utilised for the designs, which are inkjet printed. Beyond that, they’re regular 31-key, twelve-digit LCD calculators. You won’t summon a tsunami by inputting a specific sequence of numbers or anything.
Which might be why they’re priced, in Japan, at about R580. While Casio’s calculating hardware is exclusive to Japan for now, its existence on the brand’s international website suggests that the rest of world — including, hopefully, South Africa — will get a shot at some artistic number manipulation that doesn’t involve dodgy accountants soon.
