Volvo is tightly controlling the information flow about its EX60 reveal, releasing a few extra details ahead of the new EV’s January 21 unveiling. This covers everything from the car’s visual impression — the last time we saw it, the car was shrouded in dust — to what’s going on inside.
If you guessed that the company was about to lean on artificial intelligence, well done. You win a digital cookie. But there’s more to see, including some impressive range, blistering charging tech, and internal AI computer hardware.
Activate EX60 protocols
Exactly why Volvo is keeping the EX60’s appearance under wraps is a mystery. We’re reasonably certain it’ll look like a Volvo to most folks, but it’s their product reveal. The EV will have 810km of range, however, and that’s worthy of checking out for any driver. This is supported by up to 400 kW fast charging, which the company says will return 340km of available range after just ten minutes. Good luck finding an appropriate charger in South Africa, though.
Unrelated to driving, Volvo is sticking new computing hardware inside the vehicle. Called HuginCore and named after one of Odin’s all-seeing ravens, the Snapdragon Cockpit-powered system uses an Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chipset for processing sensor data. The whole setup is supposed to be capable of 250 TOPS (trillion operations per second.
That should benefit Volvo’s Google Gemini integration, which is supposed to add natural language control to the EV’s in-car functions. Instead of stilted commands, drivers (and passengers) will apparently be able to have a conversation with their EX60 about exactly why the air conditioner should be set at its lowest setting on the hottest day of the year. Further updates will allow Gemini to analyse vehicle sensor data for… some reason. It’ll answer questions about what’s outside the vehicle following software updates, apparently.
