That Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion subscription is finally paying off… if you like playing GameCube games. After the GameCube Classics library launched alongside Ninty’s new Switch 2 — featuring only three games — the company is finally ready to deliver the sixth: Luigi’s Mansion lands on 30 October.
In before ‘Luigi’s Mansion 1 HD’
You will, of course, need an active subscription to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion (that ‘+ Expansion’ bit is key) to gain access to the built-in GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and SEGA Genesis emulators. It’s also worth noting that the GameCube Classics library is only reserved for Switch 2 owners.
Landing just in time for Halloween, Luigi’s Mansion joins the likes of The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur II, Mario Smash Football, and Chibi Robo! Plug Into Adventure!. Nintendo is very, very slowly dripfeeding content into the Classics library, with plans to add Super Mario Sunshine and Pokémon Colosseum later.

This means that all three Luigi’s Mansion titles are now playable on the Switch 2, in the form of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD and Luigi’s Mansion 3. While Nintendo is simply emulating the original 2001 GameCube version, if it’s anything like The Wind Waker, players can expect small graphical upgrades, likely featuring a toggle for a CRT filter to maximise that nostalgia.
It’ll cost you, though. If you don’t already have a Switch Online + Expansion membership, you’ll have to pick one up for R630/year if you aren’t looking to share it with anyone. Grab the family bundle (with room for seven other accounts) and it’ll cost R1,130/year for the privilege of online gaming and a couple of emulators.
