Battlefield 6 hasn’t even been out a full month, and new content is already on the way. Today, that takes the form of the game’s free-to-play battle royale game mode, Battlefield REDSEC, and the first of three planned post-launch content updates.
The battle royale mode won’t be surprising if you followed BF6‘s launch hype. A scrap of a teaser was shown off during the open beta launch event, and data miners uncovered references to a codenamed ‘Granite’ project, which turned out to be Redsec (short for ‘Redacted Sector’).
Getting Battlefield 6 to more gamers
Come 17h00 SAST today, Tuesday, 28 October, when the update is scheduled to drop, prospective players need not own the full game (and who can blame them when it starts at R1,200) — Redsec will be free-to-play.
EA has kept specifics close to its chest, but it’s safe to assume Redsec will share at least a few things in common with other games in the genre. Squads of up to four players will likely be dropped onto a large map that will progressively shrink — or, sticking with the theme, have its sectors redacted — while they battle other squads to secure the win. There could also be a loot mechanic or some form of progression unique to the mode to keep players coming back.
What could make this stand out from titles like Warzone, Call of Duty‘s own free-to-play BR mode, is Battlefield‘s Frostbite engine and the amount of destruction it enables. We’ll have to wait until 17h00 to know for sure.
Along with the new game mode, the main game will also receive the first of three ‘Season’ updates to its battle pass system, including new maps, modes, vehicles, guns, attachments, and cosmetics.
