Apple (and Samsung) cannot get a break. First, the South Korean company tries to suck some oxygen from the iPhone presentation, and now Huawei wants to unveil its new MatePad Mini on the same day as… whatever Samsung is cooking up.
That means 4 September will be a busy day for everyone. Huawei will reveal a new tablet, while Samsung will attempt to avoid having its toes stepped on too hard. We’re keen on anything that gives the world more lovely tech to play with, and the Mini version of Huawei’s MatePad sounds — according to rumour, at least — worth checking out.
MatePad Mini me
There’s not much specific info from Huawei on the device, with just the MatePad Mini title being made official so far. The Chinese teaser text for the device suggests plenty of power under the hood, unless we’re totally missing something. The company says that this is “[a] different Mini, a super-Mini,” according to translations.
Rumours have been around for some time, outlining physical specs as well as the colour options we can expect. A Kirin 9 chipset is expected, with the Kirin 9020 5G — the Chinese version of the processor jammed inside SA’s Pura 80 Pro — being a strong possibility.
Combine that with an expected 8.8in AMOLED display and Huawei’s plans to stack it up against the iPad Mini don’t seem preposterous. Other details may have to wait until the 4 September reveal, but talk online suggests Snowy White, Obsidian Black, and Spruce Green colourways coming to the MatePad Mini at launch.
International launch details are similarly obscure, but it’s possible South Africa will get the premium small tablet from Huawei sooner rather than later. If the bonkers Huawei Mate XT launched in our region, there’s no reason for a more mass-market device not to turn up.
