With August drawing to a close, it won’t be long before the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is ready to officially adjust the country’s official fuel prices. Fortunately, according to the latest fuel price data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), South African motorists are in for a treat this September.
Not just petrol drivers, but diesel drivers, too. We get why you might be a little sceptical, especially considering the rough couple of months diesel drivers have had to suffer through, but things seem to be finally returning to normal, with a roughly 50c/l decrease expected to come diesel’s way. Petrol drivers… well, it’s still a decrease.
It’s a good time to be a diesel driver
We should note that the CEF’s figures below are predictive and are subject to change. The CEF, a state-owned energy company reporting directly to the DMRE, keeps track of those economic factors that influence the price of fuel locally — the Rand/US Dollar exchange rate, as well as international oil prices.
By tracking these factors daily, the CEF offers the most accurate look at the coming fuel price adjustments. Typically, the DMRE determines these changes on the last Friday of any given month, but only officially adjusts the prices countrywide on the first Wednesday of a new month. That’ll be Wednesday, 3 September.

With less than a week left until the DMRE makes those decisions, the figures below are unlikely to differ much from the DMRE’s official version. This month, you can thank a generally lower oil price internationally when compared to July for the sudden fuel price drop, while the Rand has remained sturdy, on average.
Unfortunately, the CEF cannot account for the price of LP Gas, the adjustments to which will be revealed by the DMRE early next week, alongside the official fuel price adjustments.
Here are the petrol and diesel price predictions (so far) for September 2025:
- Petrol 93: decrease of 13 cents per litre (R0.13)
- Petrol 95: decrease of 4 cents per litre (R0.04)
- Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 51 cents per litre (R0.51)
- Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 53 cents per litre (R0.53)
- Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of 36 cents per litre (R0.36)
