If you’re tired of all the queues and are still stubbornly ignoring Checkers‘ fantastic Sixty60 app, the retail outlet has unveiled the Xpress trolley in-store, dubbing it the country’s “first smart shopping trolley, pioneering a major step towards a frictionless, technology-led in-store experience.”
Checkers queues begone!
Setting aside the fact that Chamberlains has had ‘smart trolleys’ for some time already, the idea is still an excellent one if you prefer to do your shopping in person (and at a Checkers store). Rather than filling your trolley and standing in a line, the new Xpress trolley allows users to scan and bag their items as they shop, before tapping their card on the trolley and walking right out the door.
That’s the idea, anyway. Shoprite announced today that it was testing out the technology with ten Xpress trolleys at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell from mid-August, with a further ten available at Checkers Constantia. Should the pilot prove successful, we doubt it’ll be long before more of these turn up at your local Checkers.
“This pilot allows us to reimagine the in-store journey using technology for a more frictionless shopping experience,” said Neil Schreuder, chief strategy and innovation officer at Shoprite Group.
Each Xpress trolley comes equipped with a screen that’ll tally up your running total in real time, built-in navigation tied to the store you’re visiting, and a simple way to view all the ongoing and personalised specials. Customers will need to scan their Xtra Savings card before they can start shopping with the smart trolley, and use the “provided” shopping bags.
