If you’re one of OpenAI‘s frequent South African ChatGPT users, you may want to cast your eyes further afield in search of better pricing for a subscription. The AI company has launched its cheapest subscription to date, but it’s confined to users in India for the time being.
OpenAI goes to India
ChatGPT Go will set subscribers back 400 rupees, or just over R80, per month for broader access to the company’s services. The pricing is a concession to that country’s economy. For contrast, South Africa is expected to pay the full American rate of $20/m for ChatGPT Plus — around R350 per month.
For their money, new OpenAI subscribers will receive ten times the message limits, images generated, and file uploads, and double the memory of free-tier users. It’s not quite up to the benefits received by ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but it’s also considerably cheaper.

Despite India’s economic status, the country is ChatGPT’s second-largest user base in terms of users. The launch of a highly affordable tier is supposed to benefit and grow those users, but OpenAI is also looking to turn the country into a larger revenue stream.
As for when other countries can expect local access, the company said that “We are working to expand access to Go for additional countries and regions.”
