If you’re one of the owners of a Sonos Roam speaker that has started overheating, you’re one of a select group of unlucky users. The company recently acknowledged that some of its 2021 portable speakers are experiencing heating issues, centred around the USB-C charging port.
The problem, according to Sonos, isn’t widespread at all, though it says it is “closely monitoring” reported cases and taking steps to reduce the likelihood of problems.
Not quite the fall of Roam
The issue appears confined to the original batch of Sonos Roam units, which debuted in 2021. The successor speaker, the Roam 2, included several improvements over its pregenitor, including (so far) a lack of heating issues.
Sonos said, via a statement (Engadget), “We’ve closely tracked a limited number of reports involving the USB-C charging connection on some first-generation Sonos Roam speakers. While the overall incidence rate is very low, and environmental conditions appear to play a role, we’ve taken several proactive steps to even further reduce the likelihood of this issue, including software updates and accessory improvements.”
No steps need to be taken right now, should your own Bluetooth Sonos unit be acting up. There’s no recall for the speakers planned and, based on the company’s response, owners can expect a battery-regulating firmware update soon.
