Action camera maker Insta360 is decoupling its drone-producing subsidiary Antigravity from its business operations, making the company a standalone venture. The drone producer plans to make its big independent entrance into the market with a drone version of its parent company’s 360-degree-recording X camera series.
Antigravity takes off
Antigravity aims to specialise in drones for people in the creative space, as well as beginners looking for a more gentle drone-flying learning curve. A true full 360° drone could be a game-changer. A drone that can switch to recording at any angle at any time would be incredibly versatile, allowing operators to reframe angles at will, producing pretty cool shots in the right hands. The company intends to leverage its parent company’s 360° camera sensors to fast-track production.
Insta360 has experimented with its cameras on drones before. A few years ago, the company released the Sphere, a drone mount for its cameras compatible with the DJI Air 2s and Mavic Air 2. The device allowed its cameras to capture 360° footage in such a way that the drone would be invisible in the shot. It’s no longer in production, at least at present.
Besides the Sphere’s bubble bursting, Insta360 says the prospect of entering the drone production market is a daunting one. The industry requires more technical knowledge and regulatory compliance than ever, so it’s decided to let Antigravity float in its own space.
The nascent drone company assures potential customers (and investors) that its upcoming product will be more than an action cam, leading to new product lines and accessory ecosystems “in the near future.” The debut drone will make its grand reveal in August 2025.
