Doom, like many things that were taken seriously in 1993, has become a meme. It went from a semi-evil (1993, remember?) first-person shooter that revolutionised the game genre to what it is today: a curiosity that developers and hackers try to get running on anything possible. And now there’s one more — a special boxed edition of the game.
Doom and Doom II: Will It Run Edition is a very limited-run physical version of the 1993/1994 iD Software being released, appropriately enough, by Limited Run Games. In keeping with the game’s theme, there will be 666 boxed copies of the game. Rest assured, they will be expensive.
The Doom that came to consoles
How expensive, you ask? Also in keeping with the ‘man goes to hell and kills everything theme’, it’ll be $666.66. At today’s exchange rates, that is R12,600. It’s a little less diabolical if you’re not an American. But for your money, you get the ultimate Doom meme package — a box that runs both titles included in the bundle. You don’t even need to install it on your console.
It’s not just a box that is essentially a specialised early 90s PC, though. A ton of software is included (187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps), plus gear. A Cacodemon statue that levitates above a magnetic base, a Cacodemon handheld that also runs Doom, limited-edition cards, and a cassette tape soundtrack set round out the things you’ll get for your bonkers amount of money. Assuming you’re quick enough to buy one.
You needn’t go that far if all you want to do is hop into the reworked FPS classics. A standard and Big Box edition are coming to the Switch, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, starting at R570 ($30). That’ll net you the tweaked control scheme, that massive number of maps, and improved visuals. Pay R1,890 for the Big Box edition, and you’ll scoop up the cassette tap soundtrack and a random assortment of trading cards in addition to the game.
