Nintendo’s goals are beyond our understanding. Clearly. In all its infinite wisdom, and less than a week until the blow-out Switch 2 presentation takes place, the Japanese outfit has seen fit to announce a decidedly Switch 2-less Nintendo Direct, which kicks off this afternoon. That’s Thursday, 27 March, for all you future readers out there.
“Tune in tomorrow, March 27th, at 7 a.m. PT for a livestreamed #NintendoDirect, featuring around 30 minutes of upcoming games for Nintendo Switch. There will be no updates about Nintendo Switch 2 during this presentation,” Nintendo wrote in an announcement on X/Twitter.
Is this goodbye to the Switch 1?
It seems absurd that Nintendo still has even 30 minutes worth of game footage for a console that may be considered ‘old news’ in just a few short months. Whether this is more of an epic final send-off for one of the best-selling consoles of all time – which bolstered the current handheld gaming market as we know it – or Nintendo’s idea of shifting the remaining drivel ahead of the new head, remains to be seen.
According to industry insider Jeff Grub, who has proven himself with a decent track record in the past and most recently ‘leaked’ the news of this very Switch 1 Direct, expects there to be something of note revealed or discussed later today. Speaking on Giant Bomb’s Power Block podcast, he said:
“The reason I heard about a Direct originally is because of a partner game… there will be one game that causes the most conversation and it won’t be about Nintendo necessarily.”

As much as we’d love for that to be a reference to Team Cherry’s epic metroidvania… we aren’t getting our hopes up. Perhaps we could see the return of Microsoft’s Halo franchise that is reportedly headed to every non-Xbox console in the next few months. Or maybe, just maybe, we’re getting the Bloodborne remaster. Only time will tell.
Whatever the case, whatever games that have been cooked up for the Switch 1 Direct will likely be headed for the company’s Switch 2, seeing as how the company already confirmed broad backwards compatibility between the two consoles.
If you’re interested in watching what is very likely the final Switch 1 Direct presentation for yourself, you can. The livestream kicks off at 07h00 PT time, translating to 16h00 SAST. It’ll be hosted on Nintendo’s YouTube channel, and we’ve also embedded it below to make finding it a little simpler. Or you could check out Stuff tomorrow, where we’ll have a breakdown of the best games slated to arrive on the Nintendo Switch.
