This definitely won’t be the first time you’ve heard about a possible Half-Life 3 release, and it probably won’t be the last. New rumours have surfaced that suggest Valve’s third main entry to the series has entered a new stage of development, which could signal an imminent announcement.
Half-Life 3 almost confirmed?
The latest batch of rumours comes courtesy of well-known Valve-focused data miner ‘Gabe Follower’ who shared their findings in a video on their YouTube channel. Known internally by its codename HLX, Gabe Follower has detailed what they believe to be discoveries related to Half-Life 3 of groups called ‘hlx’, ‘hlxaudio’ and ‘hlxartists’ they uncovered from Valve’s internal systems.
Their findings also include code relating to console commands uncovered within the code of other Valve games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2, meant to handle NPC behavior adjustments, wider optimisations, dynamic navigation meshes, deformable props, and improved dynamic hair systems to name a few.

This, along with other recent rumours, seem to point to a launch relatively soon as Valve’s CEO Gabe Newell has gone on record saying his company has waited this long to make Half-Life 3 because they wanted new technologies to showcase. Judging from what Gabe Follower has uncovered, it seems like Valve is cooking up a rather complex game for what could be the final chapter of Gordon Freeman’s story.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, it is important to note that until Valve officially announces Half-Life 3, there is no Half-Life 3. This HLX project could just as easily be a follow up or spin-off to Valve’s impressive VR title Half-Life: Alyx. Or an entirely new project altogether.
Knowing Valve, we won’t get anything official until it is good and ready. If your Half-Life itch has flared up, you should check out the recent demo for the ray-traced remake of Half-Life 2. Old ray-traced Gordon is better than nothing, right?
