Huawei today has unveiled its latest foldable device, the Pura X, at a launch event in China. The company’s new smartphone might look a little familiar to other brands’ clamshell folding devices, like the Galaxy Z Flip 6, but its form factor hides a slightly different 16:10 aspect ratio.
Most of the specs have been confirmed on Huawei’s official Chinese site, except for the chipset it uses. The odds are high that the Pura X houses one of the Kirin chips we’ve seen in other recent Huawei devices, perhaps the Kirin 9020 as seen in the Mate X6 released in November last year or the Kirin 9010 from the Mate XT Ultimate.

The chipset might be a mystery but thankfully the other specs aren’t. Huawei has gone for an inner folding display that measures 6.3in diagonally across its 16:10 aspect ratio. The panel boasts a resolution of 2,120 × 1,320px and some LPTO tech to give it a refresh rate of 1-120Hz.
The departure from the norm continues with the outer 3.5in display, which sports most of the same specs as the inner display only this one is square with a 980 x 980 resolution.
Just above the external screen are the three rear camera sensors, not commonly seen on clamshell-style foldables. There’s a 50MP OIS-kitted main shooter, a 40MP ultra-wide sensor, and an 8MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom.

Huawei’s gone with a 10.7MP front-facing sensor for selfies, for some reason. That one probably won’t get much attention considering the rear array can be used for crisper selfies thanks to the second display.
Other notable specs include a 4,720mAh battery with 66W wired and 40W wireless charging, an IPX8 protection rating, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.2 support.
In China, Huawei offers the Pura X in two memory and storage configs, 12GB of RAM with either 256GB or 512GB of storage. There’s also a ‘Collection edition’ that ups the RAM to 16GB and adds a 1TB storage option.
The entry-level Pura X starts at RMB 7,500 (about R18,878) with the ‘Collection edition’ starting at RMB 9,000 (roughly R22,654). There’s no word yet on if this new device will make it to South African shores. If that changes, we’ll let you know.
