Sony unveils its Alpha 1 II next-gen flagship mirrorless camera

Sony Electronics has released the Alpha 1 II, its second-generation full-frame mirrorless flagship camera tailored for professional use. Packed with AI technology and enhanced ergonomic design, the Alpha 1 II promises high resolution, speed, and versatility for the detail-oriented photographer.

Be the Alpha 1 II

The camera boasts a 50.1 MP reason with an Exmor RS sensor stacked on a CMOS sensor. The latest BIONZ XR image processing engine improves image clarity in APS-C crop mode. Sony reckons its new shooter offers blackout-free continuous shooting at 30 fps and AF/AE tracking with up to 120 calculations per second. The highly-requested Pre-Capture feature captures the second of action that occurs prior to pressing the shutter, just in case you miss something.

AI-based Real-Time Recognition AF recognises a human head and torso instantly and maintains tracking for animals, vehicles, and more. A new “Auto” mode dynamically adjusts to any subject. Enhanced low-noise at mid- to high-sensitivity ensures clearer images in challenging conditions, while the anti-distortion shutter reduces distortion and noise.

It also includes a new deep-type padded eyepiece cup for additional viewing support. A standard eyepiece comes with the camera by default but can be swapped with the deep pad based on customer preference.

For video creators, improved optical stabilization offers up to 8.5 stops for stills (7.0 for dynamic shots) and a Dynamic Active Mode for smoother footage (unavailable for 8K or 120fps). The Alpha 1 II also includes a redesigned grip and shutter placement, customizable buttons, and a 4-axis adjustable 3.2-type LCD for versatile usability.

The 2.5GBASE-T wired LAN provides faster data transfer, allowing professionals to work even faster, with seamless integration with Adobe Lightroom and Google Drive. The sustainable packaging should give environmentally-conscious buyers some karmic relief.

Weighing at just 743 grams, Sony’s flagship Alpha 1 II is launching in December 2024. While still not fully available in South Africa, it should go for close to R145 000.
