Samsung’s Galaxy S24 FE packs in Galaxy AI for a more affordable price

It’s finally that time of the year, boys and girls. You’re in luck if you’ve been holding off on the S24 line-up until something comparable with fewer zeroes on the end turns up. Samsung, to nobody’s surprise, has unveiled the Galaxy S24 FE (Fan Edition) alongside the “new” Galaxy Watch FE (LTE), which will do just that.

While the world eagerly awaits the debut of Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16 range, Samsung’s already stressing about bringing the tech to its sequel devices – something it’s now done in the S24 FE. It’ll include “full Galaxy AI capabilities” when the $650 (R11,150) smartphone hits shelves in selected markets in early October.

“We want everyone to enjoy all the benefits of our latest mobile innovations,” said SeaYoung Lee at Samsung Electronics. “Galaxy AI opens so many new experiences for users, helping them communicate, and be more creative and productive. Galaxy S24 FE makes the powerful performance and premium Galaxy AI capabilities of the S24 series available to even more people.”

If you’re the type to let Galaxy AI lie dormant in the back of your smartphone aside from the odd accidental summon, you’ll be glad to know Samsung’s put in the work to make the S24 FE a great standalone device, AI aside. It rocks an Exynos 2400e chipset inside, with 8GB of RAM and 128/256/512GB storage.

Powering the 6.7in, 120Hz-capable FHD+ display is a 4,700mAh battery that beats out even the regular S24’s sub-par 4,000mAh battery. You’ll still need to put up with the middling 25W charging, unfortunately.

Samsung has put a whole lot of emphasis on the S24 FE’s camera, mainly thanks to Samsung’s ProVisual Engine, which makes use of, you guessed it, artificial intelligence to bolster the FE’s 50MP main sensor, 8MP telephoto lens, and 12MP ultra-wise sensor adorning the FE’s rear.

Don’t expect much of an upgrade from the new Galaxy Watch FE. Samsung already released a stripped-back Watch FE earlier this year, with the newer model adding LTE functionality on top of the 40mm casing, 1.5GB of RAM, and 247mAh battery.

Samsung has, in the past, brought over the FE edition smartphones into South Africa, and we have no reason to expect it won’t this year. There’s no word on local pricing or availability yet. Expect that news to follow shortly.
