It’s no secret that we aren’t the strongest fans of the original PS5. There’s no doubt that it’s a wonderful console deep down, but you’d only know that if you can look past the console’s hideous hulking figure and shockingly white outer shell. PlayStation, which turns thirty in December, has announced a slew of “nostalgic” PS5 consoles and accessories.
Unsurprisingly, they’re gorgeous. PlayStation thankfully gave up on shilling the original PS5, and instead only focused on the more manageable PS5 Slim and the $700 PS5 Pro – which both received a fresh coat of paint. Also joining the line-up are a grey PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, regular DualSense and even a charging dock.
A grey area
There’s just one little snag. PlayStation ran out of grey paint after producing 12,300 of its new Pro console bundles and couldn’t be bothered to head back to the store for a new tub. The result? It’ll be a fight to the death between fans serious about propping one of these bad boys up, and the scum of the earth – scalpers.
If you’re the first type of buyer, we wish you the best of luck. You’ll need to jump through some hoops to make that happen, with pre-orders opening on 26 September – and a yet-to-be-determined price tag hovering around the $1,200 (R21,000) mark for the bundle – in those places where direct.playstation.com is available.

You might, however, have more chances with the PS5 Slim (Digital) bundle – or one of the standalone DualSense controllers, or the still-too-expensive PS Portal. The bundle, which includes the console, DualSense controller, a vertical stand, and (we’re not joking here) a grey ‘console cover for a disc drive’ – no disc drive included.
PlayStation hasn’t yet confirmed quantities of its other bundles and standalone accessories, meaning South Africa might get a look-in a few months down the line. We’ve reached out to ask if South African PlayStation distributor Gamefinity expects to have any local stock but we aren’t holding our breath given the limited global supply.
