It’s that time of the month again, folks. Time for the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to either uplift our spirits or absolutely shatter them into pieces. Normally, this is when we’d tell you to run for cover (and the nearest garage) but after June’s official update knocked R1+ off the prices across all grades of fuel, we feel a little more optimistic.
Thankfully, our optimism has paid off. The Department has maintained that same energy for July, bringing yet another month of cheaper petrol, diesel and paraffin with it. It marks the third petrol price decrease of 2024, which has regularly favoured the country’s diesel drivers – often leaving petrol drivers to fend for themselves with fuel prices above R25/l.
From Thursday, 4 July, onwards, petrol will instead hover around the R22-R23/litre mark.
Good news, everyone!
If you’d kept up with the Central Energy Fund’s (CEF) petrol price predictions throughout June as we have, the change probably won’t come as much of a shock. The CEF, a state-owned energy company reporting directly to the Department, is charged with tracking any mitigating economic factors daily that could rock fuel prices in SA ahead of the first Wednesday of any given month.
Specifically, that means keeping an eye on the current Rand/US Dollar exchange rate, and the price of refined oil globally. The Department, which is in charge of officially adjusting the prices, looks at all the same data to arrive at the figures seen below. Fear not, for it cannot artificially inflate these at the drop of a hat. It’s all down to those factors we mentioned earlier – though it does control the country’s slate levy mechanism.
This month’s slate levy will be decreased by 4.38c/l.

The data has not been published on the CEF website yet. How did you manage to get hold of this?
Good news indeed for decreased petrol price
Good news. It was always first Wednesday, so why is it on Thursday this month
Thank you Kevin, I thought I was going blind or can’t read properly. They make changes just like they want to and we must fit in or f@ck off.
Petrol price change on a thursday, really?
Yip, price will only go down on Thursday. Apparently something to do with the new ministers appointment.???
Change on Thursday?? Why am I not surprised. They do as they like in any case. Next month it will probably be on a Friday.
I hate it when they say BIG/MASSIVE petrol drop because it’s not big at all.
The dept says that the new petrol price kIcks in on Wednesday. Yet petrol stations are still charging the old price. What gives?
Why do we not benefit from Saudi low oil prices? Their Brics membership is of no value to us. Or are the corrupt ministers raking in the cash?
I’m not happy at all. When are the food prices going to drop accordingly?? R1.00 / Lit. less for petrol and then huge tariff increases on electricity!! We the public always suck on hind tit😭😭
At least
I appreciate it but I have lost hope to the black led Government. The first mayor of our TownTabankulu had exchanged of words with Msholozi in 2010 we suffer since then no development in our Town. I sorry for their political indifferences thus ANC prblm even t/day 🙏
Definitely not a big win as most small businesses like mine rely on the fuel price as I travel a lot long distances and for it being late and I had to fill Wednesday morning so now I’ve lost nearly a R800 just because some idiot moron decided to make it a day later. Hope you that decided to do it a day later that you will lose 777 x 77 more in cash.
We appreciate the drop in petrol prices that benefits car owners yet would have HIGHLY appreciated a +R1 drop in diesel prices that benefits all since we all visit the shops for groceries transported by diesel trucks.
