With Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest and Microsoft’s Xbox Game Showcase planting their feet firmly in June, PlayStation is getting its kicks in a little early, officially announcing a new event going live at midnight, technically falling on 31 May for any interested South Africans.
The event, a State of Play — a noteworthy difference from PlayStation’s usually larger Showcase events — is expected to be roughly 30 minutes long and will be streaming in the usual places (YouTube and Twitch) and, surprisingly, on TikTok. X.com has been unceremoniously left out, despite the platform’s streaming abilities.
We’ll also throw the YouTube live stream at the bottom of this article so you can quickly find it later.
State of PlayStation’s Play
There’s no mention of what games we can expect to come our way from PlayStation, though we know the line-up includes a mix of PS5 and PSVR 2 titles, “plus a look at PlayStation Studio games arriving later this year.” Why the distinction? We reckon it’s Sony’s way of hyping up the long-rumoured PC port of God of War: Ragnarök that it had sitting in the pipeline.
Hell, a fair few titles are expected from Sony’s flagship studio. One is the heavily anticipated Ghost of Tsushima sequel slated for a 2025 release that could get its start at tonight’s State of Play. Another is the new ‘Astro Bot‘ game leaker Billbil-kun teased a little over a week ago. Then there’s still that Until Dawn remaster that’s been quiet since it was confirmed for a 2024 release in February.
We’re less excited about the probable Horizon Zero Dawn remaster (that we’ve awaited since it was rumoured in 2022) than the PSVR 2 PC support that’s on the horizon. There’s a chance PlayStation could save that announcement for a larger event down the road, but fingers crossed it arrives sooner rather than later.
