Blue and red-themed retail giant Pick n Pay continues its strive into the digital age and this time it’s actually for the better. The retail chain has updated its Smart Shopper loyalty program with the launch of a new app.
Dubbed Pick n Pay Smart Shopper on the Google Play Store and simply Pick n Pay on Apple’s App Store, the app is already available and offers a few rather nifty features.
You won’t be forced to sign in or register right away, either, with a ‘guest’ login sufficing until you’re ready to commit to something more long-term. But that’s pretty much only good for replacing those junk mail pamphlets that tell you about all the current specials – which you’re bound to get anyway.
If you’re already a Smart Shopper, you’ll need to enter your SA ID or passport number to link the app to your account. If you aren’t registered, you can fix that in the app. There is also a field that allows sign-in via email but you’ll need your password on hand because resetting it via the app appears to be ‘under development’ (it didn’t work).
Pick n Pay’s new intelligent purchaser app
Firstly, having the app means you don’t need to carry your plastic Smart Shopper card around with you, saving you some precious wallet space and pocket weight. It also means easy access to your Smart Shopper balance and a quick way to load redeemable vouchers to your virtual card before its next ‘swipe’.
Additional functions include a digital barcode of your account that you’ll no doubt still need to scan at the till and a built-in QR code scanner if you’d like to use your points instead of cash. You can join PnP ‘Clubs’ to gain extra points on specific products and learn how to further maximise your points earnings with PnP’s partners.

The more interesting feature, at least in our opinion, is the added ability to exchange your Smart Shopper balance for airtime or data through Pick n Pay Mobile, the retailer’s own mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Rather than let your points expire when you’re not able to redeem them in time at a store, you can either turn them into more time on social media or send them to a friend or loved one. Nothing says you care like the gift of mobile data, right?
“We have re-engineered the tech behind the app, and our new machine-learning algorithm is generating more relevant personalised discounts and new product recommendations. These updates lay the groundwork for our future plans to grow the app, and we are excited to build on this platform to bring more and more innovation,” says Wayne Mhlanga, Digital Transformation Officer at Pick n Pay.
