Melon Mobile launches eSIM functionality and Family plans

Remember Melon Mobile? The mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that launched a couple of months back? We’re not surprised.

It’s been quiet, unable to compete with the country’s larger (and faster) networks. The MVNO, which piggybacks off MTN, announced plans to launch eSIM support (something MTN only recently got around to doing) and what it calls family plans in October.

For the blissfully unaware, eSIMs are digital “embedded” SIM cards that require no physical installation. They’re the way of the future, what with Apple foregoing physical SIM slots entirely in some territories.

“eSIM is another step towards a truly digital mobile company. Our customers now have the choice to use our service over eSIM or physical SIM, or even have a Melon eSIM as a secondary SIM to take advantage of our Data & Voice prices – especially when they are locked into long-term contracts they can’t get out of,” said Calvin Collett, Melon’s founder and CEO.

The operator’s eSIM support has already gone live and can be applied to for free through its mobile app (Android, iOS). Melon reckons it won’t take longer than five minutes to get up and running – without needing to head to a physical store. If you’re already stuck in a contract elsewhere, you’ll be able to load a new eSIM as a second SIM, to store data and minutes that won’t expire.

Family means family

In a move that would make Dom Toretto proud, the operator is introducing family plans, set to go live on 2 October 2023. This allows Melon account holders to create multiple subscriptions under one umbrella and dish out the network’s data and voice bundles to joined accounts.

“With the launch of Melon Family Plans, South Africans will have the freedom to build customised plans suited to each person they wish to include in their Family Plan. They then have the ability to Top-Up or change plans whenever necessary, all from one account. It’s the personalisation of mobile plans for the whole family.”
