We’re going to take a wild guess here and say you like money. Or more specifically, having it. We know you like Doritos. Combine those two things with gaming, and you’ve got yourself the Doritos Crunch Cup (though you won’t find many actual Doritos here), which is officially returning for round three at this year’s Comic Con Africa.
Having successfully lured more than 400 participants to the Crunch Cup in 2022, Doritos is hoping to shatter that number, after expanding the free-to-play tournament to Cape Town’s inaugural Comic Con in 2022. Doritos hasn’t mentioned what sort of prize money players can expect – though if last year’s R32,000 prize pool is anything to go by, any winners won’t be walking away dissatisfied.
What, no Rocket League?
The tournament, which is free-to-enter for anyone attending Comic Con, will span the entire four-day event (22-25 September), and give gamers the chance to try their hands in Call of Duty, FIFA, Street Fighter and Fortnite. You’ll want to plan your ticket-buying accordingly as each game will have its own day at the festival.
- Friday, 22 September – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Saturday, 23 September – FIFA 23
- Sunday, 24 September – Street Fighter 6
- Monday, 25 September – Fortnite
Entering is simple enough. There’s no messing about with online forms before the event. Just show up on the morning your game of choice is being played, head over to the Doritos Crunch Zone (found in Hall 5) and sign up in person. Registration opens at 09:00. Doritos hasn’t provided a cut-off time so if you’re serious about competing, the earlier the better.

In a bid to expand the tournament this year, Doritos has included the “Beat the Pro” which is exactly what it sounds like. Fans will be given the opportunity to raise their hands in the crowd and attempt to beat a ‘pro’ in their respective game. Should you come out of the one-on-one victorious – a real possibility in games like FIFA – you’ll get to leave with R1,000 in prize money. And probably a new girlfriend, too.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Doritos to celebrate the vibrant gaming culture at Comic Con Africa, and we can’t wait to see players from across the continent come together for some epic gaming action. We are bringing boldness to CCA with our Mega Chip hunt activations promising an unforgettable experience for fans and gamers alike,” says Ntumi Kondile, brand manager for Doritos.
