Been feeling empty lately? That’s probably got something to do with the lack of football, English or otherwise. Hopefully, Showmax’s recent announcement, that it will be live-streaming the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup, might fix that.
Hoping for a miracle
The tournament is kicking off on 20 July this year, sticking to the middle-of-the-year schedule that last year’s Men’s tournament didn’t quite manage to pull off. This time ‘round, it’s being held across two nations – Australia and New Zealand. Unlike the 2022 World Cup, South Africa is a part of the conversation along with Morocco, Zambia and Nigeria.
You’ll need access to Showmax’s most expensive tier, Showmax Pro, to join in the fun from your home, however. Fortunately, Showmax is lowering the price for a short time in a bid to get more eyeballs on the tournament for July.
Where a month would usually cost R235/m, the MultiChoice-owned streamer is currently offering the service at a discounted rate of R200/m, valid until 31 July 2023. Judging by last year’s tournament, we reckon the reduced pricing will see yet another surge in viewership.

Following Banyana Banyana’s recent success at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), this year’s tournament might actually be worth a watch. It’s rare to see South Africa excel in anything football related, and we’re taking advantage while we can. It’s not like we’ll be seeing any sort of footballing excellency from the country’s male team in the 2026 World Cup, right? We think the team’s last few appearances (or lack of) have proven that.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off on Thursday, 20 July, though the home team isn’t getting a chance to play until Sunday, 23 July, when they will square up against Sweden.
