Curro – you know Curro, one of the country’s largest indie school networks — is set to host another esports tournament, this time for students in the Western Cape. The Curro Clash LAN, as it’s named, will take place at the Curro Durbanville Primary School on 23 and 24 June 2023.
The point? Because it’s awesome. But also, as a “fantastic way to showcase a school’s strengthened commitment to developing generations for a digital world,” says Magdeleen de Kock, the school’s Digital Transformation Facilitator and eSports project lead.
This is the second Curro Clash LAN, with the first having taken place in March of this year, at the Curro Krugersdorp High School. While that tournament was specifically for students apart of the Curro system, the upcoming Clash LAN encourages students from other schools to attend and compete. Finally! Now we can all get a chance to see that girlfriend that “goes to another school.”
Kicking your *** in… Minecraft Education?
This time ‘round, the tournament – spanning over two days – will see the children compete in a capture-the-flag mode in Minecraft Education, Overwatch 2 (it won’t be PvE, that’s for sure), Valorant and perhaps the best eSport game out there; Rocket League. Sorry, CS fans.
Registration for the event opens next month, 7 June. There’s a R200-per-child fee to shoulder first, though there will be a “fantastic selection of prizes, sponsored by Acer for Education.” And if Acer is involved, there’s a good chance that the prizes are actually fantastic. Expect some PC hardware and games to go in the direction of the winning teams. Children looking to enter need to be between the ages of 12-18, with their schools being allowed to send individual students or entire teams.
That R200 entry will guarantee you access to a game station, including a comfortable chair, “enough” tablespace, a LAN connection, and power sockets. Approximately 200 students will be competing, meaning that entries are finite. You’ll have to be quick once registrations open on 7 June 2023.
