If you thought a game where the primary focus was to wreck your opponents using cars and guns (and car-guns) wouldn’t translate well to a live-action adaptation, who cares? It’s happening anyway. Peacock is actively developing a live-action Twisted Metal series that’ll see Anthony Mackie in the starring role. It’s set to premiere on 27 July.
If you’re wondering what the hell Twisted Metal even is and when it’ll appear in the next chapter of Fortnite, you’re far too young. Heck, only a percentage of Stuff was around back when the Twisted Metal series was at its peak in the 90s. Regardless, imagine what a baby between Mario Kart’s Battle Mode and Rocket League would look like. That’s… Twisted Metal. Oh, and there’s a killer clown involved.
Swivelling alloys
Now that we’re all caught up, it’s time to wonder aloud how a live-action adaptation could possibly work. Don’t expect the teaser trailer to do you any favours, either. All we got was a shot of the Free World’s Papa Doc trying his hardest to strike a menacing pose before getting in his car, loading up his guns, and picking the perfect track before heading out into an apocalypse-riddled sunset.
We got a little bit more footage in the form of Sweet Tooth (that killer clown we mentioned earlier), though the footage was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, and was hardly worth writing home about, let alone here. Sorry, Mom.

Fortunately, the series’ description gives us a little more information. It describes Anthony Mackie’s character as a “motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life,” while the unseen Stephanie Beatriz is a “badass axe-wielding car thief.” Hey, we didn’t say how much it explained.
What with the recent success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, we’re sure this is just the beginning of a live-action videogame adaptation wave. Let’s just hope that this one is at least worth tuning in for.
