Be gone spam: WhatsApp working on way to automatically block spam calls

Nobody likes spam. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. No wait, that’s sand. Spam isn’t any better. It’s a problem that cannot be easily solved. Meta’s WhatsApp is looking to make some changes that should hopefully alleviate some of the irritation sand spam causes.

A new feature, first spotted by WABetaInfo and dubbed the fitting name of ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ will allow WhatsApp to automatically filter out any incoming calls from unknown numbers. Thus, leaving users more time to go about their day without any additional frustration.

Don’t let the spam get to you

What with WhatsApp’s recent introduction of the Communities tab (which are essentially just groups on a far-larger scale), the need to block unwanted spam calls is rising. Any member of a Community can access your profile, and by extension, your phone number.

The setting will be toggleable in the privacy settings of WhatsApp, as pictured in the image above.

As for when we might see the update roll out to everyone… who is to say. According to WABetaInfo, the update is still under development, not even having reached WhatsApp’s beta tester programme. That doesn’t mean it won’t eventually, but it also doesn’t guarantee that it will.
