We all understand the pain of being blue-shelled. Well, most of us do. If you haven’t yet felt the sting of those flying blue bastards, we’re sorry to inform you that you’re not very good at Mario Kart. And that’s okay. Some are better at being hit with blue shells. Others are better at throwing them. With Mario Kart Deluxe’s latest free update, blue shells could become the new meta (if you want it to).
Yup, the choice is yours. The update adds the ability to turn any item on or off for any race. Want to see real karting? Turn off all items besides the blue shells and prepare to say goodbye to your best friends. If keeping these people around is a must, just turn the blue shells off entirely.

Turning off select items is only an option in offline VS races and certain online modes. Which is good, because who actually pays for Nintendo Switch Online? And the best part? You can play it right now. The update was officially released yesterday, 7 December.
Don’t fret if you still haven’t bought the Booster Course Pass which will see a total of 48 new tracks added to the game before 2023’s end. This update is separate from that and doesn’t need your credit card to obtain. It is possible that Nintendo is using the update’s release to corral hype before some major announcements at tomorrow’s Game Awards. If that were to happen, then yes, you might need that credit card after all.
P.S. While writing this article, we learned that blue shells are called ‘Spiny Shells’. We just wanted you to be as upset about that as we are. Carry on.
