Unsurprisingly, as one of the few legal places to watch the FIFA World Cup in the country, Showmax Pro broke viewership records on Sunday during the tournament’s opening match. Though many might label the match-up as a boring one (Qatar vs. Ecuador), it still became Showmax’s most-watched sporting event on the platform. But are we really surprised?
The match itself contained controversy, which possibly drew more viewers in than it may have initially garnered. The full-time score saw Ecuador take the victory 2-0 over Qatar – the first time in history a host nation has lost its opening match. Something even Bafana Bafana managed to pull off in 2010.
Going Pro (is cheaper now)
We’re sure the tournament has continued to break Showmax’s viewer records since its opening day. Especially after the 7-0 drubbing Spain handed out to Costa Rica yesterday – or the surprising, yet hilarious win for Japan over Germany.

Breaking records is made far easier when your platform’s prices are cheaper too. Showmax Pro recently altered its prices – specifically for the World Cup. Where a month of Pro used to cost R350, it’ll now only set you back R300. A month of Showmax Pro Mobile costs R200. These prices aren’t forever. At the beginning of February, pricing will return to regular rates, meaning a Mobile Pro subscription will cost R225/m.
