Two years after introducing MagSafe for iPhones, Apple is only now getting around to introducing a magnetic car mount MagSafe charger. Cool… right? It would be if it didn’t cost you $100 to own.
Convert that to South African prices, and you’re looking at paying close to R1,800 for a charger that sits in your car. Add on VAT, and the fact that U.S prices tend to wane on the more expensive side in South Africa and you’re looking at R2,000+.
For. A. Car. Charger.
The charger is known as the Belkin Boost Charge Pro Wireless Car Charger with MagSafe. Because why not? We guess the name Belkin Car Charger was deemed a little too wordy for the higher-ups. When buying the Belkin Boost Charge Pro, you’re getting 15W of fast-charging juice at your disposal. And of course, Apple’s stamp of authenticity goes along with it. Whether that’s worth $100 or not is left up to the customer (it’s not).

You might have seen car chargers with similar (or sometimes better) tech specs than the Belkin charger. For far less money, too. The difference here is that these ‘MagSafe’ chargers use the ring on the back of the iPhone to hold it in place. Then, they charge your device with Qi charging, which considerably lowers the charging speed. Still, a slower charge to save R1,500? Sounds good to us.
So, if you’re interested, you can pre-order your Belkin Boost Charge Pro Wireless Car Charger with MagSafe from Apple directly. Or you could wait and pay the extra fees once, or if, it ever lands in South Africa. We’re sure it will. Apple loves money and loves any opportunity to earn more.
