DStv drops ads on new channel for kids

DStv introduces 1max channel

MultiChoice has done the impossible. this week, it launched a new channel with – get this – no ads. Yes, we couldn’t believe it either. The channel, known as the Moonbugs Kids Channel is aimed at kids still in preschool.

Moonbug Entertainment, the company behind the channel, is known for its various YouTube channels that offer children’s entertainment content in a multitude of languages. Unfortunately, the channel on DStv is locked to English.

You’ve probably heard of Moonbug Entertainment before. Perhaps not by name, but certainly by one of the company’s most popular shows – CoComelon. The channel became an Internet meme once it started gaining an absurd number of subscribers, surpassing PewDiePie’s channel subscribers last year.

Not an ad in sight

That’s just one of the company’s many shows that are popular amongst kids. DStv has managed to land all of them. Besides CoComelon, these shows will be available on the channel: Blippi, Gecko’s Garage, Morphle, Arpo, Little Angel and Oddbods.

“The agreement highlights DStv’s shift in mindset about digital-first content,” MultiChoice stated.

DStv’s group executive, head of content strategy and third-party channels, Georginah Machiridza said it realised the benefits of adding channels such as this one for its platform.

DStv went on to say that the channel would suit the target demographic’s schedule quite well. Whether it be “mealtimes, playtime, bath time, bedtime and more.”

“MultiChoice are very selective about the kind of channel that gets on the platform, so for us being on MultiChoice is almost like a quality stamp of approval,” says Nicolas Eglau, Moonbug’s managing director.

To find the channel, just head over to channel 314 on your DStv decoder. The channel is live as of Thursday, 20 October, and it’s available to all DStv customers, from Access to Premium.
