Blood Psalms is an upcoming Showmax original coming in September

If you’re itching for something local and new then Showmax has something you might be interested in. Blood Psalms takes place in an action-filled fantasy world, set in ancient Africa, one thousand years after Atlantis’ downfall. The series follows the last five houses of Kemet, as they deal with the foretold “end of days”. It’s filled to the brim with some of South Africa’s best talents, filmed entirely in SA, and best of all, hitting the small screen this September.

Blood Psalms draws from elements of a multitude of African mythologies and looks at various different tribes in Season 1 – the Akachi, the Uchawi, the Ku’ua, the Chini, and Great Nziwemabwe – as they migrated south from Kemet, which is now Egypt, and formed their cultures,” says Layla Swart, one of the two creators behind Blood Psalms. Swart is joined by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka in the creation of Blood Psalms, both of whom worked on 2020’s Oscar entry Knuckle City.

As any good trailer should, we didn’t learn more than we needed to know. It had enough to attract watchers, and leave them wanting more. To get your hands on the entire series, you’ll need to wait until 28 September (and have a Showmax account). We’ll be watching these weekly since Showmax has decided to go that route rather than release it all at once.

The show features several SAFTA (South African Film and Television Awards) winners and nominees. There’s Bokang Phelane, Mothusi Magano, and Zolisa Xaluva to name a few. There are still four other SAFTA winners in there, joined by seven SAFTA nominees. There’s no shortage of talent.

You can check out the official trailer below, or add Blood Psalms to your Showmax watchlist here.
